The Short Answer
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your brand easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude to find, understand and recommend. It rests on four things: a clearly defined brand entity with consistent facts everywhere, content that answers questions directly, independent sources that corroborate what you say about yourself, and technical access for the crawlers that feed AI search.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
Search used to end in a list of ten blue links. Increasingly it ends in a written answer. When someone asks an AI assistant for the best link building agency, a CRM for a small team or a way to fix a slow website, the assistant writes a response and names a handful of brands inside it. Answer engine optimization is the discipline of earning a place in that response.
AEO is sometimes called generative engine optimization (GEO) or LLM visibility. The labels differ; the goal is the same. You want AI systems to know your brand exists, describe it accurately and recommend it when it genuinely fits the question.
How AI Assistants Decide What to Mention
AI assistants draw on two sources of knowledge, and AEO has to work on both.
- Training data. What a model learned when it was built. This is a snapshot of the public web and changes only when a new model version is trained, so improvements here take months.
- Live retrieval. Many assistants now search the web while answering - ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude with web search all do this. Pages that are indexed, well structured and corroborated can be picked up within days or weeks.
In both cases the model is looking for the same signals: a clear, consistent picture of who you are, content that directly answers the question being asked, and independent sources that agree with what you say about yourself.
AEO vs SEO: What Changes and What Does Not
AEO does not replace SEO. Live retrieval still leans heavily on conventional search indexes, so a page that cannot be crawled or indexed will not be cited. Technical SEO, relevant content and quality backlinks remain the foundation.
What changes is the unit of success. SEO measures rankings and clicks for a page. AEO measures whether your brand is named, how it is described and whether that description is correct - often in an answer the user never clicks through from.
1. Make Your Brand a Clear Entity
AI systems reason about entities - companies, people, products - rather than keywords. If the facts about your company are vague or contradictory, the model either skips you or fills the gaps with guesses.
- State the same founding year, markets, services and leadership on every page and profile
- Publish Organization schema with your legal name, alternate spellings, founder and official profiles
- Link your website to your LinkedIn, directory listings and other official profiles, and link them back
- If your name resembles another company's, say plainly that you are a different business
We applied this to our own site. AiS LABZ is easily confused with similarly named firms, so our About page and structured data now state explicitly that we are an independent company - a small change that removes an entire category of wrong answers.
2. Write Answer-First Content
Assistants extract passages, not whole pages. Content that states the answer early and plainly is far easier to quote than content that builds up to a point.
- Open each page with a two- or three-sentence direct answer
- Use headings that mirror the questions people actually ask
- Prefer specific, verifiable statements over marketing language
- Add FAQ sections for the follow-up questions a buyer would ask
- Include comparison content where buyers weigh options side by side
3. Earn Third-Party Corroboration
A brand that is only described on its own website is a single, self-interested source. Models place more weight on facts that several independent sources agree on.
- Complete, consistent profiles on the review and directory platforms your buyers use
- Genuine client reviews on those platforms
- Mentions in industry publications, roundups and podcasts
- Helpful participation in communities where your buyers ask questions
- Original research or data that others want to reference
This is the slowest part of AEO and the part that matters most. It is also the part that cannot be shortcut: fabricated reviews and paid link schemes create exactly the kind of negative signal that is hardest to undo.
4. Give AI Crawlers Access
Check your robots.txt. Blocking AI crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot keeps your content out of the systems you are trying to appear in. Whether to allow training crawlers is a business decision; blocking retrieval crawlers usually works against visibility.
Some sites also publish an llms.txt file - a short, plain-text summary of the business and its key pages. It is a proposed convention rather than an adopted standard, and not every AI provider reads it, but it is cheap to maintain and forces useful clarity about how you describe yourself.
How to Measure AI Visibility
There is no Search Console for AI answers yet, so measurement is deliberate and manual at first.
- Build a fixed set of 20-50 prompts your buyers would realistically ask
- Run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on a regular schedule
- Record whether you are mentioned, in what position, how you are described and who appears instead
- Track referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics
- Correct inaccuracies at their source - usually your own site or an outdated profile
Common AEO Mistakes
- Inconsistent facts across the website, schema and external profiles
- Claims that nothing outside your own website supports
- Blocking AI retrieval crawlers without realising it
- Writing for keywords instead of questions
- Expecting training-data changes to show up in weeks
- Ignoring negative or inaccurate mentions until they spread
Final Thoughts
AEO rewards the same thing good marketing always has: being clear about who you are, useful to the people you serve and well regarded by others. The difference is that AI assistants now summarise that reputation in a single answer. Make the facts consistent, answer questions directly, earn independent validation - and measure whether the answers change.
Common Questions
FAQ
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. SEO focuses on ranking pages in search results; AEO focuses on being named and accurately described inside AI-generated answers. Most AEO work - technical health, clear content, authoritative links - also helps SEO.
Changes can appear in assistants that search the web live within days or weeks of being indexed. Changes to what a model learned during training only appear when a new version is released, which can take many months.
It may help some systems understand your site, but it is a proposed convention rather than an adopted standard and not all AI providers use it. Treat it as a low-cost addition, not a substitute for consistent facts and third-party corroboration.
Organic AI answers cannot be bought. Some platforms are experimenting with clearly labelled advertising, but being recommended in the answer itself depends on the signals described in this guide.
